Vitra

Vitra was founded in 1950 by Willi Fehlbaum, a Swiss furniture maker. The company is based in Birsfelden, Switzerland, with a production facility in Weil am Rhein, Germany. In the 1950s, Vitra entered into a licensing agreement with Herman Miller, allowing Vitra to produce and distribute Herman Miller designs in Europe. This included the iconic designs of Charles and Ray Eames.

Vitra and Eames Designs

Since 1957, Vitra has been producing the designs of Charles and Ray Eames for the European market. This licensing agreement made it possible for European customers to access the famous designs originally produced by Herman Miller in the US.

Iconic Designs

Under Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames created some of their most iconic pieces, such as the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the Eames Molded Plastic Chair, and the Eames Aluminum Group Chairs. These designs became famous for their innovative use of materials and ergonomic design.

Sustainability and Innovation

Like Herman Miller, Vitra has a strong focus on sustainability and innovation. They strive to produce furniture that is not only aesthetically pleasing and functional but also environmentally friendly and durable.
