Pastoe

Pastoe is a Utrecht-based company founded in 1913 by Frits Loeb. It started as a furniture store, but dissatisfaction with suppliers led them to begin producing their own furniture. The production proved successful not only for their own store but also for other retailers selling the wooden furniture. The factory grew and soon became larger than the store, leading the company to continue as a manufacturer.

Cees Braakman at Pastoe

When Cees Braakman succeeded his father as the company leader in 1948, he changed the course of the company and introduced a new production method. These modern techniques also influenced the furniture designs.

The Ideas of Cees Braakman

Braakman acquired his ideas during a study trip to the major manufacturer and plywood pioneer Herman Miller. During his visit, the company was busy with the models of Charles and Ray Eames. Braakman was in the right place at the right time. The new ideas also fit well with the philosophy of the Goed Wonen (Good Living) foundation, which Pastoe joined. The understated and sober design of the furniture, combined with quality and custom-made options, gave Pastoe a unique position in Dutch design history.
