Gispen
Gispen is undoubtedly the best known Dutch producer of tubular steel frame furniture.
The company was founded in 1916 by W.H. Gispen and started as an art forge. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, W.H. Gispen designed his own collection of lamps (Giso) and tube frame furniture in the 20s and 30s. He also started producing them. By taking care of the design for the prestigious Van Nelle factory building in Rotterdam, the brand gains a lot of prestige and fame.
In 1949, W.H. Gispen leaves the company and new management is needed. In the 1950s, as followers of the Goed Wonen foundation, new designers entered the company. The best known are Wim Rietveld and Andre Cordemeijer. This results in lighter, cheaper furniture and new material use. Still, the focus is increasingly on office furniture and in the 1970s, Gispen stopped producing living furniture. Some of the classics have now been included in the collection by Dutch Originals. Gispen itself has again released its own collection of home furniture under the name NgispeN.
