In 1890, Jules Wagemans began working as an upholsterer in Maastricht. His son, Henricus Wagemans, transformed the business into a successful furniture factory in the early 20th century. During the economic crisis of the 1930s, the brand name Artifort gave the company a new impetus, and with great success. Since 1928, Meubelfabriek H. Wagemans & Van Tuinen has been known as Artifort.

With renewed energy, the first permanent designer, Theo Ruth, joined in 1936. He brought contemporary design to Artifort's renowned quality and comfort.
